What is international / global fleet management?
If a company operates vehicle fleets in more than one country, eventually with vehicles in multiple countries spread all over the world, we define this as international or global fleet management.
International fleets range widely in size. At one end are multinational groups running thousands of vehicles across many countries. But international fleet management is just as relevant on a much smaller scale — for example when a company is based in Germany and keeps its core activities here, yet also runs a number of vehicles in neighbouring countries. As soon as vehicles cross a border, the additional layer of complexity described below begins.
Challenges of international and global fleet management
On top of the national challenges of fleet management, international and global fleet management is shaped by two additional aspects:

Country-specific particularities: Even though the fundamentals of fleet management are the same everywhere, every country still has its own particularities. These concern, for example, legal regulations, supplier availability, specific vehicle requirements resulting from climate or terrain conditions and, last but not least, the cultural significance of company cars as a salary component for employees.

Cross-country coordination and harmonisation: In addition, an international or global fleet manager has to coordinate — and where appropriate harmonise — fleet management across several countries in order to ensure efficiency from a headquarters perspective.
The challenges of international and global fleet management are therefore fundamentally the same topics we also describe here in the national context:
It comes down to the question of whether and to what extent to outsource fleet management, how to design a cross-country car policy, how to optimise the supplier strategy across countries, how to roll out fleet software internationally and, not least, how to realise cost savings internationally or globally.
What makes it harder, however, is the greater complexity — resulting from the necessary knowledge of country-specific particularities and the higher coordination and harmonisation effort.
Two aspects of cross-country management are particularly important. First, it is essential to have fleet software or a reporting system from an external service provider that creates at least a minimum of international data transparency.
Alongside this rather technical aspect, the second success-critical factor is the strategic centralisation decision: to what extent to centralise processes and policy globally or regionally — or, conversely, to give countries and regions enough freedom to adapt to local requirements, so as not to provoke too much resistance to headquarters.

International experience behind the network
Our international reach is grounded in hands-on global fleet experience. In his earlier career, Marcus Hennecke, founder of Hennecke Fleet Consulting, helped run a global outsourcing programme for a fleet of around 8,000 vehicles across 60 countries as director of business development at a leading international fleet-management provider.
He was first responsible for building up local operations in countries not yet covered, in particular across Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa. He then acted as global key account manager, globally coordinating cost-savings projects and reworking the client’s car policy. The result is extensive personal international fleet management know-how, plus a global personal network with local fleet experts.
Besides this, also most of our further consultants (see team) have valuable international experience in fleet management as well as in automotive and IT-projects.
